The short version
- This website uses no tracking and no analytics. Fonts, scripts and icons are served from our own server, not from third parties.
- It only uses technically necessary cookies or local browser storage — for example to remember your cookie choice, your language choice (Deutsch/English, stored in a small cookie called “ml_sprache”, and in your account if you have one, so that emails reach you in your language), or to keep you signed in after you log in to your account.
- Our hosting provider (Hostinger) automatically records server log files (such as your IP address, browser type and time of access) to deliver the site securely.
Embedded applications (Vocabulary Trainer, CEFR Assessment Tool)
The CEFR Assessment Tool is a separate application that runs on servers operated by Google (Google Cloud Run, region us-west1, USA). When you open its page — or open the tool directly via “Open in a new window” — your browser connects to Google’s servers to load it. Your IP address, browser and device information and the time of access are transmitted to Google in the process.
The Vocabulary Trainer has been delivered from our own server since October 2026 (maylang.de/trainer/); loading it does not involve Google. The previous version temporarily keeps running on Google’s servers (USA) so that users can back up and carry over their progress — your IP address is only transmitted to Google if you deliberately open that old version (link in the notice on the home page). On all other pages of this website there is no connection to Google servers.
The Vocabulary Trainer is usable without an account; your progress is then stored only in your browser. If you choose to create an account in the trainer, it uses Google Firebase to store your word lists and progress. Details are in the German privacy policy (section 4) and in Google’s privacy policy.
Your Maylang account (optional)
Anyone aged 16 or older (or with a parent’s permission) can create an account. We store only what is necessary: a profile name (it doesn’t have to be your real name), your email address, your password (only as an irreversible hash), the times of registration and sign-in, and — if you choose to use them — the classes you join (with the time of your request and approval, plus a history kept for up to two years that is not visible in the app), exam codes you link, game scores, profile picture, messages with your teachers or the editorial team (for students; a teacher can only write to you while you are a member of their class, and the editorial team does not read your conversations with a teacher), and your newsletter consent. If you leave “Stay signed in” ticked when you sign in, we store a random value (as a hash), the name of your browser and the times you signed in and last used it, and you stay signed in for 90 days after last use — you can sign out any device under “Settings → Security”. If you sign in to the Vocabulary Trainer with your account, your learning progress (per word card: box, due date, correct/incorrect counts and timestamps) is stored in your account. If you practise in the Grammar Navigator while signed in, we store for each exercise its ID, level, the points of your best attempt, the number of attempts and the time of the last change, so that your profile can show which exercises you have completed (the teacher of a class you belong to can see this; teachers first have to agree to rules on handling this data, and we store the time and version of that agreement). You join a class through your teacher’s invitation link and your teacher has to approve you; after that, the teacher can see your profile name, your profile colour with initials and the results of the tasks entered by the teacher, but not your email address. In addition, in the “Progress” view of the class the teacher sees a summary of your learning progress for each active member, so that strengths and weaknesses become visible: for the games the best score, the number of rounds and the last time; in the Vocabulary Trainer the number of cards, the hit rate, the streak, the progress in the course book lists, the hit rate per word class and the words with the most mistakes; in the Grammar Navigator the completed exercises with points per category; for exams the attempts and results (also per topic) of the codes linked to your profile. This applies as long as you are a member of the class; once you leave or your membership ends, the teacher no longer sees any of it. The editorial team has the same view, and a teacher never sees your email address. This is part of the teaching you joined the class for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). If a teacher enters a Navigator exercise or an exam for the class as homework or as “used in class” (only the material, date, due date and a note by the teacher are stored, with no reference to a person), the teacher sees for exactly that material whether and with what result the class members worked on it (for Navigator exercises the best attempt, for exams the first attempt over the codes linked to your profile). If the teacher enters an exam as a task, you automatically receive a personal exam code for it, which is linked to your profile; your result then appears in your profile and in the class evaluation. For each class the teacher sees an evaluation (by task and by person, also as a downloadable spreadsheet file), but no email addresses. For people without a profile the teacher can issue exam codes and enter a name or initials for them; this name is stored only together with the class in the database, not in the exam data. If the task or the account is deleted, these codes are deleted together with their results (exception: if a person has linked their code to their profile and already has results, the result stays in their profile). You see your own tasks under “Tasks”. Teachers can also send the invitation link by email from within the app to addresses they type in themselves (at most 30 per sending and 60 per class and day). If your teacher entered your address this way, you receive a single invitation email from us with the link, the teacher’s name and the class. Your address itself is not stored. So that nobody receives the same invitation twice, only an irreversible fingerprint of the address is noted for the invitation link (a hash formed with the link key, from which the address cannot be recovered); it is deleted together with the invitation link, at the latest seven days after it expires. The class history only records, for each email, the time and the sending teacher, without the address. If you do not know the teacher, you can ignore the email. You can leave a class at any time under “Settings → Classes”. Archived classes are deleted by the editorial team when they are no longer needed, together with their memberships, tasks and history (exam results that are already in a profile stay there). Nothing is transmitted when you are not signed in. You can download all your data or delete your account at any time under “Settings”.
